A Newburyport City Councilor wants people to pay more than the state makes them for smoking marijuana in public places in the city. But the decision will have to wait until the new year.
The Newburyport City Council Monday night, Dec. 12, tabled until 2012 discussion on an ordinance that would impose a $300 fine and/or arrest on people caught smoking marijuana in public.
Brian Derrivan, Ward 5 city councilor, introduced the proposed ordinance to the public safety committee last month. The City Council was expected to vote Dec. 12, according to an e-mail from Chris Power of Newburyport youth services.
